Fragrance And the Limbic System

A part of our brain is linked to the limbic system. This system is what comes alive when we remember things we have previously experienced, like where we were when we first heard a piece of music or a new song, what was happening when we tasted a new dessert for the first time or perhaps how we felt when we used to smell our mother’s perfume. This last example is a great way to explain how our noses, specifically our olfactory center (the part of the nervous system which gives us our sense of smell) is directly linked to this limbic system.

Because of this, studies have proven how wearing a perfume can really boost a person’s confidence. Different scents can definitely change a person’s mood for the better and help them feel more relaxed, more attractive and more content.

As always, there is never one super-fix fragrance that can have the same positive effect on everyone. When we smell a scent it goes through two processes in our brain. The initial process is more from a survival perspective ie. does it smell good or does it smell bad? The second process is a more individual and personal process. The scent we smell will be linked to our first memory of what happened while we were smelling it. This can even stem from as far back as our childhood.

If we associate the scent with an unpleasant memory or event, the scent will never enable us to feel anything except the discomfort experienced around that memory. When we smell a scent which we associate with good memories, such as one that reminds us of our mother’s home-baked-cookies and how they tasted, that perfume will probably bring us a sense of comfort while wearing it. That sense of comfort is what enables us to instantly feel more confident.

The first way to find a perfume which really appeals to us and our self-confidence, is to follow our hearts and to follow our heads. When we take a whiff of a scent our brains will give us an answer pretty quickly as to whether we like what we are smelling or not. Once we know that we like it, our hearts will be able to tell us whether we love the scent or not, and there-in lies the rub!

There a few commonalities that research has been able to note. People who are more extraverted like to push the fragrance boundaries a little. These types of people seem to be drawn to floral oriental type scents, as well as the more gourmand type.

People who are more introverted prefer not to stand out and seem to be drawn to scents which are fresh and aquatic, with a touch of citrus in them.

Once we find our perfect scent-match, we shouldn’t feel shy to wear it whenever we need to feel more confident. Psychology recommends wearing our favourite smells just before giving a presentation or when going on a date.
